**Funeral services for Charity Singleton were privately held at the discretion of the family** Charity R. Hawkins-Singleton was born to the late Rev. Argenia and Roxie Hawkins born in North Carolina on March 23, 1932. Her father was ordained in the early 1940's at Manassas Baptist Church in North Carolina. During the Great Depression of 1933 the Hawkins family moved to Jericho, NJ. Faith being the focal point of the Hawkins family, they became members of the First Baptist Church in Jericho. Charity was baptized and gave her life over to Jesus Christ. Charity was educated in the Gloucester County school system. Shortly after graduation, she embarked on her career with the State of New Jersey within the Department of Motor Vehicles and later, the New Jersey Department of Labor. Charity believed strongly in the concept of hard work. She earnestly pursued excellence for 25 years until she retired in 1991. Charity married John C. Singleton, Sr., in 1953 and they moved to Trenton, NJ. The family later settled in Pennington, NJ. Their marriage was blessed and bonded through the birth of their two children, and in time, the addition of three beautiful grandchildren and one great grandchild. Charity was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister who, true to her name, lovingly and faithfully gave of herself, no matter how great or small, when it came to caring for the needs of her family members. As young adults, Charity and John were members of Holy Trinity COGIC in Trenton, NJ, until the passing of the late Bishop Esau Courtney, Sr. and later continued in their service to follow the Lord at Ebenezer COGIC under the leadership of Elder Clinton Love. Charity was devout in her belief in the Risen Son of God and never strayed from the teachings of the Holiness Church. Charity was gifted in her giving and selflessness. Charity's heart and love for her family and others were evident in every charitable act she performed in the service of her God and her family. No one in her presence ever went hungry for food, care or fellowship, as there were always plenty of gifts of giving that she would willingly provide. Charity also loved all types of flowers and plants and she spent many hours looking after her beautiful flower gardens. many of her efforts adorned her loving home. A true lover of God's nature and wondrous works, one would most likely, after a long, hard day, find Charity sitting on the back porch enjoying the fresh air, watching the deer in the yard and listening to the sounds of birds singing in the trees. Above all, Charity enjoyed reading and studying the scriptures and praising her Lord! To cherish her memory, Charity leaves her devoted husband of over six decades of a dedicated marriage, John Singleton, Sr.; their two children and their spouses, Charlene (Bryant) Hill, Aurora, CO and John, Jr. (Sandy), Laurel, MD; grandchildren, Jaha (Nolan) Johnson, Killen, TX, Harper Hill, Aurora, CO and John Singleton, III, Laurel, MD; and great grandson Jaland Johnson, Killen, TX. Also left to mourn her passing are her brothers and sisters, Marjorie Pyles, Philadelphia, PA, Gene Hawkins, Glassboro, NJ, Dora Funches, James (Elvie) and Marcia House, all of Jericho, NJ, Carl Hawkins, Pittsburgh, PA, and Rev. Martin (Shirley) Hawkins, Dallas, TX. Others include the late Maceo Hawkins, Arlivia Snead, Ruth Johnson, Mary Hawkins, Emnir Hawkins, Wendell Hawkins, Ula Mae Wilcox and Nan Laura McCrary. Also included are countless nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who cherished her dearly. Charity's favorite Bible passage is Psalm 23. Most appropriate in honoring her is verse 6: "Surley goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever!"
