Dorcille Peterkin

Dorcille Peterkin passed away at home, in New Brunswick, NJ on Friday, February 5, 2021. She was three weeks shy of her 95th birthday. Dorcille was born in St. James, Jamaica, West Indies on February 27, 1926 and was a member of the Bethephil Baptist Church in Chatham, St. James, Jamaica W.I. She migrated to the United States in 1975 to join her daughter and other family members in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Dorcille quickly adjusted to her new environment and took a job at Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ where she worked as a custodian for eighteen years before retiring. She also adopted Sharon Baptist Church in New Brunswick as her new church home. Dorcille loved life and always had a positive outlook on life. She loved cooking traditional Jamaican dishes and took pleasure sharing her life stories about growing up in Jamaica. Dorcille was truly the Matriarch of the family. She was very out spoken and never sugar coated anything she had to say to you. Despite her forth right manner, she was loved and respected by her family and her friends. Dorcille was predeceased by her husband, Owen Peterkin and sisters, Gretel, Hessel and Nella. There are many who will continue to love and cherish the memory of Dorcille, include her children, Vioris Jarret of South Carolina, Leroy Plummer of New Brunswick, Joyce Listrop of New York, Laurel Plummer, Eric Peterkin, Michael Peterkin, Judith Peterkin Haye, Arleen Peterkin Abiona and Ian Peterkin, all of New Brunswick; daughters-in-law, Glorine, Jennifer and Althea; 26 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed by all. Rest in peace beloved mom, grandma, mother-in-law and friend.
