Freddie Blair

Freddie’s Life Story Freddie Blair was the sixth child born to the late Freddie & Bernice Claudette (Marshall) Blair. He was born on October 19, 1953, in New Brunswick, NJ, and affectionately called “Boogie” by his mother. He is predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Tommy (Beulah) Marshall of North Carolina, Heady Blair Espino, Nora Bell Blair Wiggins, Patricia Blair Key, Hattie Blair, Cleveland Blair, Johnny Blair, and Daniel Blair, all domiciled in New Brunswick, NJ. Due to Freddie’s disability, he had to attend specialized schools which required living away from his family. That distance did not keep his family from being a part of his life and through the years their commitment to their brother was unwavering. His most recent residences included the Woodbridge facility in Woodbridge, NJ, Benchmark in Bridgewater, NJ, and then Regency Heritage Jewish Nursing Home, in Somerset, NJ. Although disabled, Freddie was able to secure employment as a door greeter and used his special message board for communicating with visitors entering or exiting the campus Woodbridge Clothing Store. Until his dietary needs changed, he loved to eat and would make it clear, in no uncertain terms when he was hungry or thirsty with hand gestures and his unique language which family and staff grew to understand. Wherever Freddie went, whether his ARC day program, church, or shopping in the mall, he was given the nickname “Freddie the Flirt!” He would purposely drop his maraca so a beautiful lady, nurse, or assistant could pick it up and give him undivided attention which caused him to flash his winsome toothless grin! When transitioning to Benchmark Group Home he attended an evening gala prom with all the right lights for dancing in his wheelchair. These eventful moments during his lifetime, allowed him to enjoy the human interaction so important to his therapeutics and feeling of self-worth. Freddie attended Sharon Baptist Church in New Brunswick, NJ under the leadership of Rev. Conway C. Johnson, Jr., Pastor, whenever feasible. He had a special spot right next to the pulpit where he was welcomed and greeted by members of the church community that fondly remembered him. Over the years he was loved by his sister Hattie who demonstrated a true commitment to his well-being until her passing. An additional devoted family member through the years was his brother Johnny, who was a frequent visitor up until his unexpected transition.
