Joe McClendon

Joe McClendon was born on October 3, 1940 to Maggie and Hollis McClendon in Chattahoochee, FL. Joe came to White House, NJ, in 1955, where he resided with his uncle and aunt, James and Martha Harris. Joe was a hard-working man from an early age. He began working at Skillman Hospital in the maintenance department. He then went on to work for American Standard, Hamilton, NJ and CB Hill in Ewing, NJ. He was the first black person to obtain a small business loan in Trenton to open up his own business, Joe's Auto Repair. "Car won't go? Call Joe" was his slogan. He taught his sons and nephews the trade and after 20 years in the business, he went to work for the The Department of Transportation, Mercer County, as a heavy equipment operator. He retired from there after 28 years of service. In his spare time, Joe enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching Westerns and spending time at his vacation home in the Poconos Mountains. During the era of CB radios, he was a former president of the CB Signal Kickers Club where he was better known as "the Grave Digger-UBT Man". Joe was predeceased by his beloved Dorothy "Dottie" McClendon.
