Marcia Elise Burwell

Marcia Elise Burwell was born in Somerville, New Jersey, on September 12, 1954. She was the eldest daughter of McKinley and Leola Hill. Marcia departed this life on October 15, 2025. During her childhood, she, along with her parents, attended Bethel Church of God in Christ in New Brunswick, New Jersey, under the leadership of the late Rev. Fred Croslin and the late Rev. Samuel Randolph. She accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at Progressive Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Elder Frank Brown. She later became a member of Church of God in Christ For All Saints in Morristown, New Jersey, under the leadership of the late Superintendent Gordon Rogers. Marcia graduated from Somerville High School in June 1973. In the years following high school, she worked as an Administrative Assistant at Bristol Myers Squibb in Princeton, New Jersey. Once retiring from that position, she worked part-time at Hand and Stone Spa in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, as a licensed Massage Therapist and Esthetician. Marcia was joined in marriage to Elder Hubert Burwell, Jr. in June 1987. Elder Burwell was later appointed Pastor of Progressive Church of God in Christ, New Brunswick, New Jersey. First Lady Marcia was a devoted wife and supported her beloved husband for over 30 years. Together through tireless laboring in prayer and outreach ministry to the surrounding community, Progressive grew to nurture many souls. On Sunday afternoons, Pastor and First Lady would faithfully visit and minister to the sick and shut-in until God called Superintendent Burwell to his reward. Marcia was appointed Church Mother of Progressive by Bishop William Cahoon and continued to serve under the leadership of Pastor Alonzo Harley. Marcia continued working in her local and District churches. She was always willing to do what she could to serve the Lord. She was full of joy and laughter and had a bottomless well of giving to anyone in need. She always remembered the elderly and shut-in Saints. Her sweet, loving spirit will be missed and cherished by all. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Superintendent Hubert Burwell, Jr. parents, McKinley and Leola Hill; and sister, Teresa Joyce Hill. She leaves to cherish her journey from labor to reward her beloved and devoted son, Vaughn Jones, Sr. (Kathryn); grandchildren: Vaughn Jr., Salim, Isaiah, Elijah, Noah, Judah, and Aliyah of Bound Brook, New Jersey; niece, Danyelle Maxwell (Henry); and grandniece Jenaya Tucker Adel, Georgia, as well as a host of family and friends.
