Rhoda Maud Dirkson Brown

Rhoda Maud Dirkson-Brown, a loving wife, devoted mother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2024, at the age of 76 in New Brunswick, NJ. She was born on August 22, 1948, to the late Thomas and Ruby Dirkson in New Brunswick, where she spent her life surrounded by family and friends. Rhoda graduated from New Brunswick High School and went on to earn her Associate degree in Business Administration from Business School. In 1972, she began her distinguished career at the Middlesex County Superior Court. Her dedication and hard work led her to become the First African American Court Clerk to an Assignment Judge and the First African American Court Clerk in Civil Division for the Middlesex Vicinage in 2009. In addition, Rhoda received a Certificate of Recognition and Appreciation for her 39 years of service in 2011. Rhoda’s commitment to her career was evident, having received a perfect attendance award over the years. Rhoda's warmth and spirit sparkled brightly throughout her life. She met the love of her life, Franklin (Bunny) Brown, at a pool party in 1968, and they were united in marriage in 1972. Known for her humble nature, unconditional love and kindness Rhoda was the matriarch of her family, a second mother to her siblings, and a nurturing force to all who knew her. Her jerk chicken was legendary, and she was often the life of the party with her infectious laughter and joyous spirit, known affectionately for her "knees of steel." She loved to dance and sing oh what a beautiful sight. Rhoda was predeceased by her beloved parents, Thomas and Ruby Dirkson, and her siblings: Thomas Jr., Robert Dirkson, and Betty-Jean Dirkson. She is survived by her loving husband, Franklin (Bunny) Brown of Somerset, NJ; her two children, Yolanda (Dave) Powell and Franklin Brown Jr.; Her two grandchildren, Adam and Chaz Robinson, her brothers, Lloyd (Verinda) Dirkson and Irving (Renee) Dirkson; her sisters, Marcia (Ralph) Blount and Carlethe (Wayne) Embry; her brother-in-law, Keith (Winsome) Brown; her sister-in-law, Marjorie Gruber; and a host of children, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. As we remember Rhoda, we celebrate her life, her love, and her legacy of kindness. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts. Rest now, dear Rhoda.
