Sidney (Punchy) Byrd Jr. Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Sidney Byrd, Jr. (Punchy) was called Home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was surrounded by friends and family. Sidney was born April 5, 1945 in New Brunswick, New Jersey to the late Sidney Byrd, Sr. and Martha Byrd. Sidney was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Jessica M. Byrd, in 1985 and his brothers Deacon James Johnson, Robert Byrd, and David Johnson. Sidney graduated from New Brunswick High School; he was drafted by the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967. He also served in the Army Reserve for 19 years. Sidney retired from Delco Battery after 30 years of service at the astonishing age of 48. Sidney was a member of the local American Legion and one of the founding members of the former Ten’s Enough Social Club. He was also very caring and giving to various charities including, but not limited to the Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Those left to cherish Sidney’s memories are his two sons, Sidney Byrd, III (Bridget) of South River and Richard Anthony Byrd (Azure) of Somerset. Sidney was also loved by his brothers, Joseph Byrd (Sheila) of Ewing, Jerome Johnson of Plainfield, Samuel Johnson (Julie) of Allentown, PA, and one sister, Linda Warwick of Franklin Park. Sidney was a loving and devoted grandfather to Daryl Sidney (Christina), Jasmyn, Cyrus, William, and Jessica Riley. He was also an amazing great-grandfather to Kayden Sidney and Shania. Sidney was also beloved by other relatives and many close friends. Sidney’s charm, quick wit, and quiet presence will be missed by all.
