Katherine Sanders

Katherine Sanders was born May 17, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of the late Edward Hall and Ethel Townsend Sobers. She departed this life on May 9, 2019, at St. Peters University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ . She was a retiree of the City of New York, where she was a clerical worker for many years in the Department of Children’s Services. Katherine relocated to New Jersey sixteen years ago . In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Shellie Sanders; a son, Frank Montgomery; siblings, Dorothy Hatcher and Edward Hall, and a grandson, Robert Johnson. She is survived by five daughters, Sandra Epps, Sharon Brathwaite, Lori Sanders, Shelly Sanders-Greene, and Lisa Sanders; two siblings, Arnold Sobers and Arnell O’Connor; three grandchildren, Katherine Young, Craig Montgomery and Gregory Epps; six great grandchildren, Paul, Tori, Craig, Jr., Kayeail, Kamiyah and Jay; and a host of other dear relatives and friends. She was unique individual, full of sage advice and wisdom, yet she was spunky, witty and dropped pearls of wisdom to her family, such as “Every shut eye ain’t sleep, and every goodbye ain’t gone.” She was a great cook and she grew vegetables in the community garden in the neighborhood. She was an excellent seamstress; she loved children, and stressed the need for education, and raised her children to be strong and independent individuals. Mother was a spiritual individual who loved God. Psalm 91:1-2 was her favorite Bible scripture. Some other remembrances from the family include: Her favorite song was one that depicted her lifestyle, entitled “My Way” by Frank Sinatra; she was a best friend to her children and they confided in her about situations that most kids would never discuss with their parents; she loved music and could “cut a rug” (dance); she did not want her family to make the same mistakes she made in her life, so she taught them many life lessons about the world and relationships. Katherine Sanders was a “one of a kind” loving parent, grandparent and sister. We shall forever cherish wonderful memories of her. May she rest in peace.
