Miriam L Demmitt

Miriam L. Demmitt, 89, of Somerset, New Jersey, entered into rest on January 10, 2026, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family. Born July 8, 1936, in St. Catherine, Jamaica, West Indies, she was the daughter of the late Estraina Dawkins. Miriam moved to the United States in the late 1980s and made a home in New Brunswick, New Jersey, before relocating to Somerset, New Jersey, in 1996. She served faithfully with Rutgers University Dining Services from November 12, 1989, until her retirement on July 1, 2002. In retirement, Miriam found joy in caring for her grandchildren and in the company of family and friends. Her faith, quiet strength, and loving example sustained and inspired those around her. She was deeply cherished by family and friends alike and her absence leaves a profound void. Her children will forever mourn her passing, remembering her as a source of wisdom, comfort and unconditional love. Miriam was preceded in death by her mother, Estraina Dawkins; her daughter, Claudette Wolf; her grandson, Rashon Middleton; and her granddaughters Diane Demmitt and Anisha Brown. She is survived by her children Shawn Hughes of Somerset, NJ; Everton Demmitt (Shelly) of Dayton, NJ; Sonia Brown of North Brunswick, NJ; Angela Rowe of Somerset, NJ; Dione Henry of Hamilton, NJ; and stepchildren Carol Demmitt and Georgia Demmitt of Canada. She also leaves her grandchildren Chenae Brown; Eric Alexis Jr.; Madison Rowe; Brielle Haughton-Hughes; Trinity Hughes, Brieana Demmitt; great-grandchildren Nyashia Demmitt, Tyier Demmitt and Nylah Demmitt and a host of friends who will hold her memory close. ____________________________________________________________________________________ NB Funeral Service is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
