Shirley Mae Tinley

Our beloved Shirley Mae Tinley, 85, took the hand of the Lord on Wednesday afternoon, November 23, 2022. She was born in Savannah, GA on January 21, 1937 to the late Sepio and Cornelia Jackson. She was later adopted and raised lovingly by T.W. Lawton. Shirley spent her adolescence in Savannah before moving to New York. It was in New Jersey where she met her late husband, Joseph Tinley, Sr. From this union, she birthed 3 children; Kenneth, Jeanette, and Karen. Shirley was a dedicated employee of Bristol Meyer’s Squibbs where she ran various machines to make medicine before retiring in the 90s. She was a faithful member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in New Brunswick, NJ for many years, serving on the usher’s board. It was, however, her devotion as a mother, grandmother, and friend that touched so many. A multitude of people were touched by her kindness giving nature. She never hesitated to be of assistance to any of her loved ones. She even raised her eldest granddaughter, known to the family as Lil’ Karen, as her own. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Joseph M. Tinley, Sr., sisters Marie Smalls, Beautine Shuman, Pauline Outten; brothers, Frank Johnson, and L.H. Johnson; stepdaughter, Evelyn Blount. To cherish her memory, Shirley leaves behind son; Kenneth Tinley of New Brunswick, NJ; daughters, Jeanette Tinley of Piscataway, NJ, Karen L. Tinley (Donald Oliver) of Paterson, NJ; grandchildren, Karen N. Tinley, Naiyma James, Rauwshan James, Mu-iyn Lawton, Shakuwra Lawton, Guy Troy Wilcox, Jr., Jatasia Tinley, Quashon Tinley, Ahmad Tinley and Omar Webb; step-grandchildren, Mark Blount and Rodney Blount; Goddaughter, Cherwan Johnson; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters Edna, Elaine, Pat, Gail, Joanne, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
